La Palestina Farm is nestled in the village of El Triunfo, just two hours from the city of Jaen in north-west Peru. Established in 1951 by Juan Alarcon Gonzales and Zobeida Coronel Martine, the farm has been under the stewardship of their son Jose since 1990. Today, coffee is La Palestina’s main source of income, supplemented by crops like bananas, yucca, and various fruit trees.
The farm spans 11 hectares divided into seven parcels, each managed by family members with unique expertise. This parcel, overseen by producer Anibal Alarcon, benefits from the collective effort of the family during harvest, ensuring efficient picking and processing. Their specialised approach across cultivation and processing has resulted in consistently high-quality coffee.
One standout varietal grown on the farm is Marshell, a relatively new addition to the coffee world. Known for its robustness, high yield, and impressive cup quality, the Marshell varietal thrives in the northern Peruvian regions, where it performs exceptionally well under local growing conditions.
Careful post-harvest processing enhances the coffee’s distinct characteristics. Cherries are mechanically pulped and fermented for 24 hours in plastic tanks before being washed and dried in solar dryers. Sustainable practices, such as using ground deposits for wastewater and raised pallets to protect the parchment coffee, reflect the family’s commitment to responsible farming.
The resulting coffee is sweet and juicy, with vibrant tasting notes of red apple, lemon, black tea, and apricot—showcasing the farm’s dedication to quality and sustainable practices.
