The Embu area benefits from rich volcanic soils and a moderate climate, both ideal for cultivating the SL28 and SL34 varietals, known for their deep root systems and resilience in challenging conditions. Farmers here also grow newer cultivars like Batian and Ruiru 11, prized for their disease resistance and early yields.

At the factory, quality is a priority. Farmers handpick only the ripest cherries, which are inspected before processing. The fully washed method used at the Rianjagi washing station enhances the coffee’s clarity and brightness. Cherries are pulped, fermented for 12–16 hours, and washed in fresh water. The parchment coffee is then dried on raised beds, where it is monitored and raked over for uniform drying.
